Dejan Stankovic commented on Aleksandar‘s decision to wear the number 5 jersey, the same one his father wore for years in black and blue. A choice full of meaning and emotion for the family.
“We talk all the time and we more or less know what might happen to each of us in the near future. He made this decision a long time ago: if one day he returned to Inter, he would choose the number 5,” explained the former midfielder to Sportinjo. “No one had used that number after Gagliardini and in the end, that’s exactly how it went. During the filming, you could see the 5 on his shorts and the choice became public.”
The young midfielder confided to his father that he feels the weight of this decision. “Just last night he told me he feels a certain pressure and that for him it’s not a small thing. I replied that it’s just a number and that, if there was anyone who deserved to wear it, it was him,” Dejan recounted. “This way I can also get him to give me some jerseys to give to friends. On the back it will just say ‘Stanković’, without the name Aleksandar. I can finally give away new Stanković jerseys, instead of the vintage ones.”
On the comparison between their respective careers, the former footballer preferred not to make comparisons. “I think by now our careers have separated, and the same goes for both Filip and Aleksandar. Football has changed a lot. Being at Inter at this age and playing on such an important stage is already a huge step. I don’t know if he’ll manage to surpass me, but he’s definitely on the right track.”
“Football and the world have changed and it’s not easy to get on a train like this. I’m proud of all three of my children. They behave well, are very close, talk a lot to each other and try to make the right decisions. Filip chose to stay at Venezia, while Aleksandar returned to Inter,” he added.
“In the end, I understood why he made this decision. It was his dream, something he carried inside since he was a child. It’s beautiful when you manage to realize your dreams, because at that point you can keep dreaming even more. Will he manage to surpass me? He doesn’t need to compete with me or anyone else. He just needs to be himself,” he concluded.
