It had never happened since Chivu has been on the Inter bench: three starters all substituted together at halftime. That’s what happened during Venezia-Inter, with the Nerazzurri coach fielding Akanji in defense and Barella together with Calhanoglu in midfield right from the start of the second half. This was reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport.
The sign of the coach’s dissatisfaction had already been clear from the bench during the first half. In post-match interviews, Chivu later explained that, if it had been possible, he would have changed all the players except Provedel, to whom he gave compliments for his saves. Unlike what happened in Bologna, where the coach made his voice heard mainly with words, in Venice the response came mainly through actions.
Despite the move, the reaction on the pitch did not come as expected. The Nerazzurri won thanks to an own goal, a solution reminiscent of what happened in Verona during the same period of the previous season. According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, the locker room “trembling” between the first and second half is becoming a recurring habit for this Inter.
