On the sidelines of the derby, referee Guida is at the center of attention for some controversial decisions. Luca Marelli provided an in-depth analysis of the officiating during an interview with DAZN.

The most discussed incident concerns the penalty initially awarded to Inter and then revoked after a review at the monitor. According to Marelli, the handball attributed to Gila was not actually such: “The VAR rightly called the referee to the monitor, it’s likely that Guida was deceived by the movement of the left arm, he thought there was contact but in reality it was with the chest.” A mistake that, in the expert’s words, weighs on the overall assessment of the referee: “It’s a pity for this error which affects Guida’s performance, it cannot be overlooked, perhaps due to too much haste because otherwise he had refereed quite well.”

However, a positive aspect of the evening should also be noted: the behavior of the two teams. Marelli wanted to emphasize how the attitude of the players contributed to the good management of the match. “A special applause not so much to the referee but to the players who contributed to the spectacle of this evening,” he said, highlighting how the protests remained contained and composed throughout the match.

Regarding the incident involving Thuram and De Winter, the assessment is clear: there was contact between the two, but it falls within the normal dynamics of a challenge. “There was very little, there was contact with the legs but it was a game challenge, there is nothing that could lead to a penalty, let alone an on field review,” Marelli concluded.
