Roberto Mancini returns to the National Team bench. The former Inter coach will lead Italy in an attempt to relaunch the Azzurri squad. Malagò‘s decision ruled out other options, including those linked to Guardiola and Pirlo, to focus on a familiar figure.
The choice did not convince everyone. In the Giornale there is a criticism that uses a culinary comparison to comment on Mancini‘s return. “In the end, in the country of pasta, reheated soup never goes out of fashion. It settles family quarrels, is easy to prepare, brings back down to earth those who pretend to appreciate Michelin-starred dishes just because it’s chic. The reality is that real cooking is hard work, the unknown is frightening, venturing out is only nice if you have nothing to lose. Reheating the soup postpones the problem: ball into the stands and a sigh of relief until the next danger.”
The newspaper acknowledges that Mancini was a good head coach, the only one able to win something since 2006. However, he is now described as “reheated soup, and reheated in the scorching Arab desert, where in 2023 he decided to sneak away to earn 25 million a year.”
According to the Giornale, that choice represented a betrayal that was nauseating for its manner and opacity. It is also recalled that, after the playoff lost to Macedonia, Mancini did not even make the gesture of resigning.
