Starting today, with the group stage draw, the new Club World Cup 2025 will officially begin. This is a completely revamped competition compared to previous versions, scheduled by Fifa from June 15 to July 13, 2025 in the United States.
A renewed format with 32 participating teams from all over the world will follow the traditional World Championship scheme for national teams. So we start with a group stage: for each of the eight groups, only two teams will be able to make it to the round of 16 and continue their path in the competition until the final.
As for previous appearances of Inter, the only participation of Nerazzurri in the Club World Cup – a competition officially born in 2000 – also coincides with the only victory of the Nerazzurri. Thanks to winning the 2010 Champions League, the Inter squad qualified for the ‘old’ World Cup by triumphing in the final against Mazembe, a Congolese formation.
To find other Nerazzurri precedents, we have to go back to the old Intercontinental Cup. A trophy that went on stage from 1960 to 2004 and was subsequently absorbed by the Club World Cup, in which the European champions faced off against the winners of the Copa Libertadores. A first competition that named the strongest team in the world, but only took European and South American teams into account.
Inter, in those years, managed to win the Intercontinental Cup twice in 1964 and 1965, on both occasions in the final against Independiente.
