Numbers that leave no room for interpretation, at least until the kickoff. On the eve of the derby, the gap between Inter and Milan in terms of standings and trophies is clear, but it hides a paradox that concerns the direct clashes.
From 2016-2017 to today, the Nerazzurri have almost always finished the league ahead of the Rossoneri. The exceptions were only two: in the 2016-2017 season, when Milan finished one point ahead, and in 2021-2022, when with Pioli on the bench the Rossoneri snatched the title on the last day at Sassuolo‘s ground, finishing two points ahead of Inzaghi‘s Inter. In all other cases, Nerazzurri superiority has been constant: 97 points of difference accumulated over the years.
On the trophy front, the gap is just as marked: nine for Inter against three for Milan in the same period. Yet, as highlighted by Corriere dello Sport, for the Nerazzurri and for Chivu there is still a pebble in their shoe to remove, and it concerns the matches against Milan.
Last season, Inter lost both derby matches. A result that, even without affecting the team’s overall path, made the fans frown. Looking at the last seven derbies, Milan has won five, with the other two ending in draws: a record that for the Nerazzurri takes on the flavor of a real taboo that is hard to erase. As Corriere dello Sport observes, in the end the ball “doesn’t care about the premises.”
