The purchase of Curtis Jones prompts Inter to reflect on the balance of the midfield. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the team led by Chivu now has solutions that no other team in Italy, and few in Europe, can boast: not only an alternative for each role close to the level of the starter, but much more.

Chivu had mainly requested the arrival of the Englishman and after weeks of negotiations the club has satisfied him. In the coming days, he will be free to experiment with all the solutions offered by the team’s nerve center.

The former Liverpool player was originally a mezzala, a role in which he has covered several positions in the Premier League. In a typical Inter lineup, he would be placed on the left-center alongside Barella and Calhanoglu, with Spence wide on the right and the untouchable Dimarco on the left flank. His versatility would allow him to also play in Barella’s position if necessary, without forgetting the valuable wild cards and substitutes who are up to the level of the main protagonists.

At Liverpool, Jones often even played as a right-back, which is why, if necessary, he could be used in a less central position. Diouf, whom Chivu has considered moving to the wing, can always play in the middle. Sucic has grown a lot.

Zielinski is considered valuable both as a mezzala, like Mkhitaryan, and as a playmaker in the absence of Calhanoglu. On the left, Carlos Augusto represents the alternative to Dimarco, while Luis Henrique, if he should remain in Milan, can be used equally as a right or left winger.

Evaluations remain open regarding Aleksandar Stankovic, who is no longer certain to stay. A clue about his possible loan move would have come, according to the pink newspaper, also from the way he was used in summer friendlies. During the tests with Serbia, Bruges and Lucerne he mainly played in the two deeper midfield roles in a 4-2-3-1, a formation quite distant from Chivu’s 3-5-2.

After the arrival of Jones, the coach could rewrite the future of the son of art. Stankovic is highly sought after on the market and Inter has always rejected every approach, but even the hypothesis of a third loan cannot be ruled out a priori.
