Stramaccioni defends Martinez: Chivu doesn't change after the first mistake

The future of Josep Martinez between the posts for Inter continues to be a hot topic. The Spanish goalkeeper has so far shown inconsistent performances, with great saves alternating with uncertainties that have cost the Nerazzurri goals.

According to Stramaccioni, who spoke to DAZN, there are no doubts about Chivu‘s choice: “He certainly has responsibilities, he guesses the ball will go one way and instead it goes the other. On the first goal I’m less harsh than others, he takes a step and stays, realizes he won’t get there but no Inter defender jumps.”

The former Nerazzurri coach then explained his view: “For me there are no doubts: he will remain the starting goalkeeper, I know Chivu and how he thinks. He is a goalkeeper who makes saves, even in Madrid he made important interventions. Chivu is not a coach who leaves you out after the first or second mistake, in fact it’s exactly the opposite.”

Stramaccioni ruled out rotation scenarios: “We are very far from thinking about a rotation, then football depends on facts.” He then recalled the reasons for the signing: “When Inter went after Martinez, they were looking for a goalkeeper skilled at playing from the back because Sommer was a goalkeeper good with his feet.”

The conclusion of the former coach remains clear: “Martinez started with a few mistakes but knowing Chivu, Martinez will be established as the starting goalkeeper. Then we know football: if there are more mistakes, then it could be Provedel’s turn, who is a ready and reliable goalkeeper, but for me there is not the slightest doubt in Chivu’s mind.”
