Tottenham kicked off their pre-season tour in Oceania with a 2-0 win over Auckland FC, but what really caught the attention were the statements made by Roberto De Zerbi. The Spurs coach sent a clear message to the squad, stressing that anyone who is not happy or proud to wear this shirt must leave the club.
The coach’s words, although referring to the situation of Lucas Bergvall—who has attracted interest from Nottingham Forest—inevitably bring to mind the case of Cristian Romero. The Argentine defender has already given his consent to a transfer to Inter, with the Nerazzurri currently negotiating with the London club to finalize the details of the deal.
“I have been very clear since the beginning of my experience at Tottenham. I said: who doesn’t want to stay at Tottenham? Whoever is not happy, whoever is not proud to stay here, must leave. I want the players to be proud and happy to stay here, to step onto the pitch at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with great motivation,” declared the former Sassuolo coach.
“Because today in football, even if we think about the World Cup, motivation makes the difference. Motivation is the happiness of staying in a team,” concluded De Zerbi, reiterating his group management philosophy.
