After the draw for the groups of the next Club World Cup was made, there are questions at Inter about who the Nerazzurri could face should they advance to the last 16.

Simone Inzaghi’s team were placed in Group E, at the bottom of the tournament bracket. According to the rules of this Club World Cup, up until the semi-finals the Nerazzurri will challenge only teams from this same bottom half, starting from the last 16, where they will face the teams from Group F.

If Inter finishes first, they would play against the runner-up of Group F – presumably either Borussia Dortmund or Fluminense – while if the Nerazzurri finish second they would meet the winner of the same group.

Assuming there are no surprises which is never a given and thus Inter, River Plate, Borussia Dortmund, and Fluminense qualify from Groups E and F, the Nerazzurri can already anticipate facing one of these three teams in the quarter-finals because the match will be between the two winners from the last 16 of these two exiting confrontations from Groups E and F.

If everything went smoothly for Lautaro Martinez and his teammates and they also reached the semi-final, the situation would become more complicated, arguing only on forecast values but always remembering that there are many variables as more than six months are left before the start.

In the semi-final, Inter should play against one of the last teams left from groups G and H which potentially should be Juventus, Real Madrid or Manchester City. For the Nerazzurri, therefore, there could be an Italian derby even before the final, a match that would be worth a great deal due to the rivalry that has existed for decades.
