After fourteen years with the Nerazzurri as goalkeeper and captain, Handanovic has left Inter. The former goalkeeper explained the background of the separation, revealing how the club’s offer did not meet his expectations.
“We talked in March, they had offered me the Primavera, it was an opportunity for growth, I would have accepted, but I wanted to work with my own group. I’m talking about players, about boys, even younger ones. With whom to set up a development program,” said the Slovenian. The crux of the matter concerned the management of the youth players: Handanovic would have liked to work continuously with a defined group, building a coherent development path.
The former captain pointed the finger at a deeply rooted habit in Italian youth sectors: “I would have trained my boys during the week and then in the match I would have had to play those who hadn’t played in the Under 23. What’s the point of all this? If you’re not good enough to play in Serie C, why should you play with the Primavera?”
A clear criticism that led to the break: “The club did not accept my principle, so I stepped aside. It’s a pity I found out in June, when there was no more time to find another place.” However, the Slovenian looks ahead with confidence: “Patience, the opportunity will come. In two weeks I take the Uefa Pro exam, I think I’m ready. I want to work with the seniors.”
A farewell that closes a cycle of fourteen seasons, with Handanovic now ready for a new challenge on the bench, preferably in professional football.
