The expulsion of Bastoni in the second half of Inter–Shakhtar Donetsk has fueled controversy. Speaking to Prime Video, former referee Calvarese analyzed the most debated incidents of the match, expressing doubts about the first yellow card shown to the Nerazzurri defender.
Regarding the overall refereeing performance, the judgment is clear: “From the 70th minute onwards, the referee’s inexperience came out, he gave in to provocations and lost control technically.” Calvarese identifies the second yellow as the correct decision: “The second yellow for Bastoni is right: the Inter defender is chased by the opponent and gives in to the temptation to push him.”
The assessment of the first booking is quite different. The former referee explains that the incident occurred in midfield in a not very clear way: “For the first one, though, we went looking for it in midfield, it’s hard to see, there is contact: you can see that he says ‘The fourth official saw you,’ but it leaves me a bit perplexed.” A detail that, according to Calvarese, raises questions about the solidity of the decision made by the German referee Osmers.
