Inter leaves the Bernabéu with a 2-1 defeat, but Lautaro Martinez looks to the future with confidence. The Nerazzurri captain spoke to Sky Sport microphones after the Champions League match against Real Madrid, highlighting the team’s performance despite the result.

“This is a competition of details, so when you make mistakes you pay the price,” began the Argentine striker. “Today, the two mistakes right at the start of the match, even though we approached it well, managing the ball, managing possession… We conceded those two goals. Then it gets difficult, they are strong, they are a top-level team, but today Inter came here and played a match with personality, like a great team.”

Martinez reiterated the club’s ambitions: “They are a team that fights to win the Champions League, just like us, which is our goal. Because as I said yesterday in the press conference, every competition that starts with this shirt is always a target.”

Regarding the match, the captain analyzed the difficulties faced: “That’s the bitterness. Conceding few shots, surely yes, the counterattack, because they have two very fast players. Then they are joined by Bellingham, then the other guy came on. So they are players with a lot of pace. We weren’t able to take advantage of all the chances we had either. In the end, we leave with our heads held high because we played a top-level match against a great opponent.”

Lautaro also acknowledged the value of Courtois: “Surely we faced one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but there’s also a bit of our own fault. We have to improve in front of goal, even if we faced a top-level goalkeeper. We could have done better.”

Looking ahead, Martinez mapped out the way forward: “We have to leave with our heads held high, improve in this aspect and then move forward. As I said before, it’s the first match, there is still a long way to go, but we have to change pace and look for the first win in the next match.”

On the tactical side, the captain explained the difficulties encountered on the flanks: “Yes, it could be. They, playing with four at the back, tightened the line. There was little space and we had to occupy more with the midfielders. In the end, in the second half, we adjusted these movements and between the lines we found a lot of space. We found the goal and another chance. We are aware that we faced a very strong opponent and we were at their level.”
