Enzo Bucchioni analyzed on Radio Sportiva the issue of the player capable of beating his man at Inter. The journalist explained how Chivu is addressing this gap with alternative solutions instead of purchasing a specific profile.

“It’s true, there was talk of a possible change of formation. It was discussed at the beginning with Chivu, even about a four-man defense; then last year the search for a player with those characteristics, who could provide superiority and a bit of creativity in the midfield. Inter has four strikers who are all obviously very strong, but none of them have those characteristics,” Bucchioni said on Microfono Aperto.

The journalist then addressed the economic difficulties that make it complicated to purchase such a profile. “Then evidently the coach either has difficulty or those players cost too much, if you’re Inter you can’t just get a small player with those characteristics and then struggle to integrate him. At Inter you need other characteristics, as we said about Asllani, he also needs to be strong in character, have experience at high levels, and to go and spend 70-80 million for a player with those characteristics… we know very well what Inter’s problems are, the fund is tight-fisted, controls all operations and is very careful.”

According to Bucchioni, the Nerazzurri coach has chosen a different path. “In my opinion, he has solved it by bringing in players with different characteristics, which however can be functional to finding more space, to breaking down closed defenses. For example, Curtis Jones—and you’ll see—he is a player with those characteristics, a box-to-box player, as we said last year, from one area to the other, he’s someone who breaks and tries to penetrate opposing defenses with great physical strength and this is a solution to create space for others, because clearly you have to double up on him, leaving space for others.”

The analysis also extended to the right flank. “In my opinion, something new is also happening on the right, a player like Spence has been brought in and you can see there that the third, the wide center-back, is a player who pushes forward and so there are dynamics there as well. In short, Chivu is working more on the movements of the players he has in the squad, who are all obviously of high quality, rather than on a player he’s missing,” he concluded.
