Bergomi remembers Matthäus: a true champion and a great Inter fan

At the microphones of Inter TV, before the match between Inter and Udinese, Beppe Bergomi recalled some moments from the Nerazzurri’s history, focusing in particular on the 1990s and his relationship with Lothar Matthäus.

The former Nerazzurri captain spoke fondly of the San Siro stadium, which turns one hundred years old: “This stadium is unique, I experience it often but it is truly special. It’s a shame about the change, there are no other stadiums like this in Italy.” Bergomi then recalled the era of the 1990s jerseys: “In those years we were the Premier League, there were international players. Wonderful years, it was very nice to have played in that period.”

About his bond with Matthäus, he said: “An exceptional teammate. We had six or seven good players, but we needed champions. Lothar and Brehme made the difference. He was a true champion, a great Inter fan and a real teammate.”

Finally, a thought about the 1989 scudetto: “A complicated match, goal by Careca then Berti and a free kick by Lothar, repeated. We had to finish it in that match and that’s where we won the scudetto, a wonderful memory.”
