Inter could shift their attention from Djed Spence to Cristian Romero. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the English full-back remains a target, but a concrete opportunity has opened up for the Argentine central defender, who is also set to leave Tottenham.
Romero is going through a difficult time with the London club. Last April, in the midst of a battle to avoid relegation, he decided to return to Argentina to treat a knee problem, distancing himself from the team at a delicate moment. This choice affected his relationship with the club environment, even though he has since become captain.
The defender played the entire World Cup with his national team, scoring a goal against Egypt and providing an assist against Cape Verde, before suffering defeat in the final. He has spent the last month and a half almost always together with Lautaro Martinez, and it is possible that the two have talked about Inter and Italy. The Nerazzurri club is looking for a ready-made reinforcement for the defense.
Contacts with Tottenham initially started for Spence, but on those occasions Romero was also proposed. Now the Argentine defender could become the main Nerazzurri target among the Spurs players. The deal will not be easy: the valuation is around 50 million and the English salary is prohibitive for any Italian club.
A glimmer of hope could open up thanks to the player’s desire, interested in a club that allows him to play in the Champions League, and to a dialogue with Tottenham, who have already signed Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi for defense. The right formula will be needed, perhaps a loan with obligation, but Inter is ready to seize this Argentine opportunity without haste.
