The defeat in the derby on Saturday night has brought back to the center of the debate an already well-known issue: the lack of offensive alternatives at Inter. With Lautaro injured and Bonny and Pio dealing with the flu, Chivu found himself fielding only Thuram as the sole striker, with no real substitutes. The situation, which also emerged during the press conference, has pushed the club to seriously consider a signing in January.
According to Tuttosport, the coach’s reflection opens up this possible scenario. Many names already linked to the Nerazzurri in the summer could come back into play, alongside other profiles that sporting director Baccin is currently evaluating.
Among the candidates is Federico Chiesa, long targeted by Marotta and still on the fringes at Liverpool. To regain a spot in the national team, he would need to play regularly: Inter might not be the ideal solution, but would still guarantee him more minutes than he is currently getting with the Reds. Then there is Raspadori, at risk of being left out in Sarri‘s system, although it remains to be seen whether he would accept a role as the fifth striker. Samuel Inacio of Borussia Dortmund, 18 years old, is also liked, but the already high cost complicates the deal.
On the obstacle front, Sancho and Sterling are free agents but cannot be registered: Inter has used up its slots for non-EU players. Diaby, a target last January, has already signed with Bayer Leverkusen. Paul Mendy of Cagliari, who has just renewed with the Sardinian club, is a center forward and is considered a profile more suitable for the future. Jay Robinson of Monza is liked as a playmaker but is on a dry loan from Southampton, which postpones any discussion to the summer.
If the club and coach agree on the need to intervene, it is likely that Baccin will aim for a surprise solution, outside of the profiles already mentioned.
