De Zerbi defends Romero and opens up to Spence's transfer

In a press conference, Roberto De Zerbi gave an update on Djed Spence and Cristian Romero, both linked to Inter in recent weeks. The Tottenham coach clarified his position on both players, showing openness to possible departures but only under certain conditions.

“I repeat what I told Djed and Lucas Bergvall: ‘I would like you to stay if you wish. If you don’t want to stay, if you want to leave, then you have to leave,’” said De Zerbi. A clear stance, leaving the choice to the players but requiring clarity in their intentions.

On the Argentine defender, the Italian coach spoke words of appreciation. “It was wrong to criticize him when he returned to Argentina before the last matchday, he showed incredible behavior,” he stated, defending a decision that had sparked some controversy. De Zerbi then revealed the method he has used since his arrival on the Tottenham bench.

“At the beginning of my tenure, in April, I had, I don’t know, a million individual meetings. And the players told me whether they would stay here or not. And I said: ‘Yes, help me to stay, and then I will help you to leave. If you don’t help me to stay, you will end up underwater with me.’” A direct approach, focusing on reciprocity between coach and squad.
