At the centre of strong interest from Bayern Munich last summer, Hakan Calhanoglu was close to leaving Inter. The Turkish midfielder, interviewed by Sportmediaset after last night’s victory for his country, Turkey, against Hungary, confirmed that he had indeed been approached by the Bavarian club, who will soon meet the Nerazzurri in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Calhanoglu explained the reason behind his refusal, giving much of the credit to the Inter fans: They lifted me not only as a player, but also as a person; I matured even more. I will always thank them; what they do, not only for me but for all of us, is unexplainable—you can only experience it. I am enjoying a wonderful moment. Our fans are incredible, they give you extraordinary strength at San Siro and we want to give them something special. Did I reject Bayern Munich last summer because of them? Yes!
