The growth of Pio Esposito has changed the offensive hierarchy at Inter. Walter Zenga, speaking in the Sky Sport studios, analyzed Chivu‘s decision to once again leave Marcus Thuram on the bench in the match against Napoli.
The former Nerazzurri goalkeeper raised a question about the Frenchman’s condition: “I was asking myself something about Thuram: when did he last play an official match? It’s been a long time, before the World Cup. A player who is not at 100% and has never started a match since the beginning of June, it seems difficult to define him as ‘not ready’. He has trained more than all the others put together.”
Zenga then identified the real reason for the exclusion: “The truth is also something else: the growth of Pio Esposito leads to choices that at this moment are not up for debate. I always say: who better than the coach, who sees the players every day, can decide who, how, and when?”
The former number one concluded with a reflection on physical fitness: “The more you play, the fitter you get: it’s not true that the more you train, the better you are for the match. Chivu will have the skill and competence to put him back in the most suitable situation.”
