The Serie A standings are really tight with many teams packed within a few points and all with the possibility of leapfrogging each other every single matchday. At the moment, Inter is in second position level on points with Napoli but with the chance to catch up with the leaders Atalanta if they win the rescheduled match against Fiorentina.

In this scenario, as we have now reached the final phase of the first half of the season, some are beginning to wonder who will come out on top at the end of the season. And what if the balance remains so tight even at the end of the return round? What would happen if two or more teams end at the top with an equal number of points?

The rules of the Serie A championship for the past two years foresee a playoff to give some decisive verdicts such as the Scudetto or the teams that are relegated. Therefore, if at the end of the season Inter should be at the top with the same number of points as Napoli, Atalanta or any other team, they will have to play a head-to-head match to win the tournament.

If, on the other hand, the number of teams with the same points equalled or exceeded three, a playoff would still be played, but only between the two best positioned in the individual standings which are calculated using the following criteria:

  1. Points in head-to-head matches;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches;
  3. General goal difference;
  4. Total goals scored overall;
  5. Draw.
