Ivan Leko‘s satisfaction was evident at the end of the match. In the press conference, the Club Brugge coach described the victory against Inter as “the most beautiful win as a coach so far,” promising to “always carry it as a memory.” A triumph that, in his opinion, has a value that goes beyond the ninety minutes.
“We were lucky but we also created it,” Leko explained. “It was a 50-50 match, we weren’t better: it was a beautiful game. Inter is a top team, they are dominating Serie A: when you see their substitutes you understand what level of team they have.” The coach then emphasized the importance of the result for Belgian football: “It is very important for Belgian football: we can say that we know what football is.”
On the tactical side, Leko admitted that his team did not impose their game as they would have liked, acknowledging the strength of the opponent: “It’s not easy to dominate against Inter. They played a good match, they were more aggressive than in Serie A: we were brave.” Then an open declaration of affection: “I love this Inter, I’ve been watching them for 5-6 years, from Conte to Inzaghi and Chivu. It’s very special to win here.”
The name of Sommer came up several times in the coach’s words. “He was the match-winner tonight: in these games you have to do incredible things and he did them. I knew him because I watched him at Inter: when he arrived here, the quality of the person and how he works is incredible. He made some mistakes, but I would like to have more Sommers in the team: you can go to war with him.”
Tresoldi received words of strong confidence: “He doesn’t miss in the box, he presses: I’m convinced he’s a modern striker, and he will reach the top.” Leko then clarified the situation of Forbs, who was left out due to a real injury according to reports: “I’m not lying: we don’t have a profile like him, I don’t change him because he’s very important.”
In closing, the coach called for clarity: “This match gives confidence, but we’re not yet at last year’s level. We still need time to grow.” The key point remains the mentality: “I’m happy when I see the desire to win and to play.”
