Speaking to Sky Sport microphones, shortly before the kick-off of Inter–Club Brugge, Paolo Di Canio analyzed the Nerazzurri’s current moment and the specific weight of the match: “This group is now reliable. Last year Chivu shaped this group and gave everyone space as hadn’t happened in the past, maybe the others had played too but much less.”
The former striker then reflected on what was at stake for the evening: “At home you can afford to play 7-8 who are not regular starters, today you know that you have to win the second one. You risk missing the train, it’s an extraordinarily important match for Inter, it’s only the second but it’s important, three points today to continue with confidence the work they are doing.”
The clearest judgment concerned the gap between the two competitions. According to Di Canio, in Serie A Inter operates on a different level compared to the European context: “In Italy they are a dominant team, I’m not saying they can let their guard down, but they are too dominant.” However, the step up required by the European phase is another matter: “In the Champions League, if they want to do something important, they have to start pushing decisively.”
