Bergomi recommends Frattesi to Roma and is cautious about the Champions League

Beppe Bergomi gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which he analyzed the current season and the prospects of the Italian teams. The former Nerazzurri captain touched on several topics, from the transfer market to European ambitions.

About Inter, Bergomi said: “Is Inter still the strongest in Serie A? I always like to say that it is the best. And it has maintained its identity despite saying goodbye to five pillars, because people like Acerbi, De Vrij and Darmian have always been fundamental for their teammates. So far, they are not bringing in starters, but supporting players, strong ones, to complete the squad and be competitive.”

The former defender then praised some players: “Stones is an experienced and talented player, Dimarco is already in great shape, Stankovic junior is good, and I would keep Pavard. Only the wing-back is missing, even though it’s tough. By now it’s increasingly difficult to find the famous ‘fifths’. Wide players either play as full-backs or as wingers.”

On the Champions League, Bergomi expressed a clear position: “We must not lose sight of Serie A, also because I make a logical argument: Real, Barcelona, Bayern, PSG… they are all superior to the Italian teams. Inter has played two finals and must aim for it again, redeeming the defeat with Bodo Glimt, but it’s difficult. Also because if you don’t bring home the Scudetto, they give you a hard time.”

There was also space for the transfer market, with a suggestion for Roma: “I would see Frattesi doing well. Someone like him, with that kind of football, could score several goals.” Words of appreciation also for Gasperini: “He is a certainty, he belongs to the category of those who have changed football. And he is unique in managing players, both on and off the pitch.”

The interview ended with a moving memory of Franco Baresi: “I would have hundreds. On February 6 we carried the Olympic torch together, he told me he was tired. As a kid I used to sleep at his and Beppe’s house, he tied my first tie knot. Seeing all those people at the funeral, on August 4, under the sun, moved me.”
