Manuel Akanji continues to grow under the guidance of Cristian Chivu. The Swiss defender gave a lengthy interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport, in which he spoke about his coach and the Italian defensive school that is contributing to his development.
“For me, defending is… the most beautiful thing in the world. The most important part of my game,” declared Akanji. The player emphasized how both he and John love to build from the back and have the ball at their feet, but he specified that the priority always remains marking. “In these aspects at Inter we have really done an excellent defensive job, as a team,” he added.
The Swiss center-back highlighted how he enjoys playing in multiple positions, also thanks to the freedom granted by the coach. “Personally, I like playing in several positions also because the coach helps me and gives a certain freedom. I would say the coach really understands defenders…,” he stated.
Asked about his memories of Chivu as a player, Akanji replied: “Yes, I remember him for the helmet, but also for his elegance and strength in duels, he almost seemed to enjoy himself in clashes.” The defender then revealed a recent anecdote: “Just the other day I watched the Netflix doc on Mourinho and he was there too: he doesn’t speak, but what tackles he made on Messi in the year of the Treble! All very exciting.”
