John Stones scored in his first friendly appearance wearing the Inter shirt, but the goal is not the main reason for his signing. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the British defender brings with him a haul of twenty titles won in ten seasons at Manchester City.
The Nerazzurri executives decided to acquire Stones on a free transfer with a clear idea: his contribution will be decisive especially in the Champions League. The former City center-back will also be useful in domestic competitions, but his input will be even more valuable in midweek European clashes, when the technical level rises.
The player himself has openly stated his ambitions: “I know that winning the Champions League is a goal and we want to bring the trophy back to the Inter fans. Everyone wants it, I do in particular.” Despite an ongoing rejuvenation process, Marotta and Ausilio deemed it necessary to add a player of this experience to the squad to compete at the highest level.
There are some doubts related to injuries in recent years, but his performances at the World Cup have reassured the management. The coincidence of the first goal is curious: Stones found himself next to Lautaro Martinez, with whom he had shared the last image as opponents in Argentina-England, with decidedly opposite moods.
