The defensive fragility of Inter represents one of the main problems at the start of this season. For four consecutive matches, the Nerazzurri have found themselves two goals down, a warning sign that concerns both their approach and individual errors, as well as a defensive phase that involves the entire team.
According to Tuttosport, what is missing is a tough and gritty marker, a figure that was once embodied by Francesco Acerbi. The center-back, relentless on opposing strikers, was let go at the end of June when his contract expired due to his 38 years of age and too many physical issues.
During the transfer market, the club did in fact reflect on the characteristics of the defense. The first names considered were Solet and Chalobah, profiles more similar in characteristics to Bisseck or Akanji. Later, Cuti Romero also emerged, an Argentine marker with qualities closer to those of Acerbi or De Vrij. However, the high demands of Tottenham and the player’s entourage convinced the management to desist, preferring to invest in Curtis Jones, so desired by Chivu for the midfield.
In this start marked by errors from the backline, the lack of a pure marker is being felt. Akanji did well last season as a center-back, but now is struggling to get going and seems to perform better as a wide center-back, a role in which he appears more comfortable. There is no immediate solution, unless Chivu tries Bisseck again in that position, even though the German loses his driving force in the center. The team will therefore have to learn to defend without being able to count on a center-back capable of marking opponents relentlessly.
