Inter pulled off a draw in the derby against Milan at the last gasp during stoppage time and so the Nerazzurri, thanks to De Vrij’s strike at the 93rd minute, managed to take home at least one point which is completely deserved. Instead, Reijnders scored for Milan in the first half with one of the few goal-scoring opportunities the Rossoneri had.
As usual, we are analysing the tied derby last night at San Siro with five things we have learned from this Milan-Inter:
1 After losing two derbies this season, a draw can’t make Inter happy, who also had the opportunity to sink Milan in the rankings and for this reason, there is a bit of bitterness. However, a point earned this way is the bare minimum and should send many signals.
2 Milan’s luck was quite evident even in this derby. To score against Sommer, the Rossoneri simply had to exploit an Inter mistake in build-up play with a stolen ball in the middle of the field and a quick counterattack. For Inzaghi’s team, before scoring at the 93rd minute, they had hit the post three times, had three goals disallowed and overall had to struggle a lot.
3 The event that causes the most discussion and anger among Inter is the blatant penalty not given for Thuram. From January onwards, doubtful mistakes against Inter are being systematically repeated. There are not many complaints from the management except Inzaghi who makes some references also to the dubious choices on the schedule. But it’s right to underline that Pavlovic’s on Thuram is a huge penalty and it’s hard to understand why VAR didn’t intervene.
4 While Conceicao locked with 5-5-0, Inzaghi made changes, shook things up, and resumed the match with some excellent readings from the bench. Perhaps everyone would have expected more hunger from Inter to win this derby after losing two this season, but it was still a match in which the Nerazzurri can be happy with the performance and the game they put on the field.
5 Too many underestimate that this Inter which might also have the Champions League as its number one focus is maintaining tremendous average points in Serie A. The projection today is for 88 points, which 99 times out of 100, are a great haul to win the Scudetto. Inter’s journey is still extraordinary but if the others end up being better, they deserve the compliments.
