The Finalissima between the Spain national football team, winner of UEFA Euro 2024, and the Argentina national football team, champion of the Copa América 2024, will not take place. UEFA has officially announced the cancellation of the match, initially scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, due to the political situation in the region and the impossibility of finding an alternative agreed upon with the Argentine federation.

In the statement released today, UEFA expressed regret for the outcome of the matter, emphasizing that “due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina cannot be played as planned in Qatar on March 27. It is a great disappointment for UEFA and the organizers that the circumstances and timing have prevented the teams from competing for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” it reads.

UEFA explained that it had sought various solutions to save the event. However, none of the proposed options were accepted by the Argentine federation.

“The first option was to play the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the original date, with a 50-50 split of the fans present. This would have provided a world-class setting, worthy of such a prestigious event, but Argentina refused.

The second option was to play the Finalissima over two legs: one at the Santiago Bernabéu on March 27 and the other in Buenos Aires during an international window before the Euros and Copa America 2028, also offering a 50-50 split of fans for the Madrid match. This option was also rejected.

Ultimately, UEFA asked Argentina for a commitment that, if a neutral venue in Europe could be found, the match could be played on March 27 as planned and announced on December 18, 2025, or on the alternative date of March 30. This proposal was also rejected.

Argentina proposed to play the match after the World Cup, but, since there were no available dates for Spain, this option was discarded. Finally, contrary to the original plan which scheduled the match for March 27, Argentina declared its availability to play only on March 31, a date that proved unworkable.”

For this reason, UEFA concluded: “With regret from UEFA, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled.”
