Simone Inzaghi spoke to Sky Sport to comment on his team’s performance after Bayern Munich-Inter, the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. The Nerazzurri coach praised his team for the win and their performance at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich-Inter, comments from Simone Inzaghi
We must congratulate the boys. Rather than the result, I would focus on how we played this match, our performance and our approach. We know that in seven days we have the return leg against a very strong team, but Inter stood their ground in every aspect.
It was certainly a match of very high quality that delights us. We were aware that Bayern had won 23 out of their last 27 Champions League games, but we must follow up this great performance in the return leg at San Siro in front of our fans.
Did I expect Bayern to press us more? Yes—but they did try, but found an Inter side who played very well technically. Just look at our two goals: on the second one, our goalkeeper could’ve waited with the ball in his hands, yet we decided to set off quickly. We believed in ourselves even after conceding shortly before. The boys must continue playing like this.
In the day and a half of preparation, we discussed the importance of being able to take possession away from Bayern, because we needed composure on the ball. We had to play football and not just clear it long, as gaining possession from Bayern is difficult. We did this with personality, especially in the first half. Later on, Bayern increased their pressure, yet the team remained calm and focused. Our goal to make it 2-1 demonstrated clearly how we intended to play, following our principles.
