The ownership has given the green light: Inter can attempt to make a move for Cristian Romero. After the halt related to Anan Khalaili and the failed arrival of Marco Palestra, the Nerazzurri management has revised its market priorities. At the center of the technical project is now the Tottenham defender, for whom the ownership has authorized an investment outside the usual economic and age standards.
Last night, Piero Ausilio confirmed the courtship: “There is definitely an interest that we are showing to the player and the club. These things take time, but there is certainly interest.” The Spurs value the defender at around 50 million euros, while Inter aims to close the deal for a figure close to 40 million, including bonuses. Contacts between the two clubs have started and Tottenham could open up to a sale if a suitable offer arrives.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Romero would guarantee aggression, physical strength, speed, and personality—qualities considered functional to Cristian Chivu’s style of football, who intends to push the defensive line higher without sacrificing solidity in the most delicate moments. The Argentine would also fill the experience gap left by the departures of Acerbi and De Vrij.
The management would like to avoid a lengthy negotiation and aims to reach an agreement by the beginning of August, also to get ahead of Barcelona and Arsenal. Romero, currently on vacation after the World Cup, has reportedly already shown interest in returning to Italy. Once the central defender is signed, Inter will focus on finding a replacement for Dumfries; for a new midfielder, however, some sales will be needed first.
