Inter, Romero slips away: Ausilio had closed the deal with Tottenham

Atletico Madrid has now overtaken Inter in the race for Cristian Romero. The Spanish club, busy offloading surplus players, is ahead of the Nerazzurri in securing the Argentine defender from Tottenham.

According to Tuttosport, the Nerazzurri management had been working on the center-back for over a month. The first contacts date back to early July, when Tottenham offered Romero during negotiations for the winger Spence, which were not pursued further due to the valuation being considered too high.

Sporting director Ausilio held numerous talks with the London club and repeatedly met with the player’s entourage. The parties had reached a complete agreement: about 40 million euros to Tottenham and a contract agreement with the Argentine defender.

However, the deal did not materialize. Without the sale of Pavard, Inter was unable to make the final push needed to close the transfer.
