Walter Zenga analyzed the moment of Inter and in particular the situation of Pepo Martinez. The former Nerazzurri goalkeeper, interviewed by Corriere dello Sport, wanted to tone down the criticism directed at the defensive phase of Cristian Chivu‘s team.
“If you criticize the defensive phase, it means you are nitpicking in a team that is confirming its value. I wouldn’t worry too much, the goals conceded are the result of individual application errors that will be fixed. I don’t think the goals conceded are a problem, also because they haven’t affected the results. Just think that last year at this point in the season Inter had already lost two matches,” said Zenga.
Regarding the mistakes made by Martinez, the former goalkeeper took a sympathetic approach: “In more than 50 matches, especially for a goalkeeper, 4-5 mistakes always happen, it’s physiological. He can consider himself lucky if he makes them when they don’t matter, which unfortunately hasn’t been the case for Martinez. Getting back in the game is not difficult. Even if you make a great save, you can end up off the pedestal in the next action. The goalkeeper must go his own way, the skill lies in maintaining constant balance.”
On the topic of being the starter, Zenga revealed his initial doubts but also his trust in the club’s choice: “At the beginning of the year I said that the goalkeeper could be the only question mark of the team. For three reasons: he hadn’t played for two years, he has no experience, and behind him is another goalkeeper who might think about taking his place. Maybe I would have chosen someone with more experience. However, I must add that when I made my debut at Inter, I was coming from a year on the bench, I had no experience and had never played in Serie A. If they chose him, there must be a logic and it will depend on things that we on the outside do not see and do not know.”
