Today’s news is that A22 Sports Management, the company which includes the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, and which won an appeal against UEFA’s dominant position, has a new tournament in mind. In previous years, there was a lot of talk about the Super League, a competition proposed by a group of European clubs, but ultimately, it did not come to fruition.
The group is now trying again and is considering a new competition called the Unify League. This event is compatible with the schedules of various national championships and is meritocratic, unlike the Super League. This was one of the major criticisms of the old Super League format, which led many clubs to abandon it.
Today, A22 Sports Management has submitted a new proposal to UEFA and FIFA to reform European football. Since the European Court declared monopoly regime management of these summits of European football in December 2023, plans for the creation of a new competition by the A22 group have never ceased. The group still needs to convince UEFA for any kind of new reform.
Their new project envisages continental competitions divided into four levels: starting from the bottom, they have the Union League and Blue League, followed by the first tier divided between the Gold League and Star League. Each league is expected to have 32 participants from each of the 55 European football confederations for a total of 96 teams qualified based on results in national championships.
Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, confirmed this, explaining how this reform could be better for the entire world of football and also for fans who will no longer have to pay for subscriptions: “The competition will be broadcast by Unify, a streaming platform designed for the fan. Unify will offer the opportunity to watch matches for free with advertising as well as affordable premium subscriptions. At A22 we are willing to work with all members of the football world, including UEFA and FIFA, to achieve our goal.
