The official announcement for the start of the next Serie A 2025/25 championship has been further postponed until late April. Yesterday, the Lega decided not to confirm August 23 as the first matchday, opting instead to pause all decisions pending the outcomes of the two Coppa Italia semi-finals.

This delay is primarily due to uncertainties surrounding the future of the Supercoppa Italiana. As known, the last two editions of the Supercoppa took place in Saudi Arabia using the new four-team format. The agreement with Riyadh, as highlighted this morning by the Corriere dello Sport, provided for the organization of 4 events in 6 years, starting from 2022, giving the Saudi hosts the option to skip two editions within the remaining four years.

Given that either Empoli or Bologna will surely participate in an eventual Supercoppa Final Four the two teams will face off next April to secure a spot in the Coppa Italia final, Saudi Arabia could choose to withdraw from hosting this edition to avoid potential negative impacts on commercial visibility.

According to the Roman daily, therefore, if Saudi Arabia were indeed to step back, the Lega would revert to the single-match format: league champions against Coppa Italia winners, and this event could be scheduled again for August. However, since the Coppa Italia itself will begin in the same month, if Bologna fails to finish the league among the top eight teams, they would face an early round scheduled either on the weekend of August 9-10 or August 16-17 if the Supercoppa takes place in January in Saudi Arabia instead. Thus, the final decision has now been postponed, with one confirmed detail: the championship will not see any pauses during the Christmas period.
