The summer of 1997 represented a crucial moment in the career of Ronaldo Luis Nazario da Lima, when the Phenomenon became the protagonist of one of the most sensational transfer deals of the era. The move from Barcelona to Inter captivated the football world, with twists and sudden changes of direction from the Catalan club.
The Brazilian recounted the details of that confusing affair through the columns of Sport. “I was very happy in Barcelona. My agent was there and in the end they reached an agreement. They called me and said: ‘Look, we have an agreement. You will stay in Barcelona with a new contract. We are very happy and Barcelona is happy too,’” explained the former footballer.
The situation changed radically within a few days. “Three days later they called me and said: ‘Look, we can’t renew this contract. If you have the chance to leave, just bring the money to pay the release clause and then you can go.’ I told them: ‘Look, I no longer feel comfortable continuing at Barcelona because these people do not keep their word. So I want to leave,’” revealed the Brazilian.
At that point Massimo Moratti entered the scene, paying the release clause stipulated in the contract. “Inter stepped forward. They paid Barcelona, I think it was 40 million euros at the time, which was a lot of money. And then I went to Inter,” concluded Ronaldo.
