Alongside his coach Simone Inzaghi, the Nerazzurri midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan spoke today at a press conference to preview tomorrow’s second-leg quarterfinal match in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. Here are the words of the Armenian number 22 ahead of the important European clash.
Are you conscious of being close to achieving something extraordinary? It will be a great opportunity, but we must think only about tomorrow’s match, which will be difficult. I have been here for three years, and in four years, the coach has done excellent work building this team. We are united as a group, and there’s a good atmosphere. We want to fight for the goals we set from the very start. We’ll see whether we make it to the final or not.
What do you expect from Bayern? Everyone can say what they want. We just want to focus on our game and our match. Many people talk outside the pitch, but we don’t want to listen to that because that’s football.
Does it bother you that there is always talk about Inter having the obligation to win? We are calm, mature, and have experience. We know we have to win every match in Serie A, the Champions League, and the Coppa Italia. We don’t need to listen to external talk. We always want to win, but without getting nervous, and we are aware of our responsibilities and what we are doing.
Does the team’s relatively high average age add extra motivation, considering this may be the last opportunity for many players? We do our best to help the team. We want to take advantage of this chance because it might be the last opportunity to play a semifinal or final. Let’s see if we can all achieve this objective together tomorrow.
Will another exceptional, unplayable, performance be necessary? You immediately created headlines based on that. It’s something I’ve thought for two months already because I see how everyone works and sweats for positive results. I still hold the same opinion: we are a very strong team, and we want to advance as far as possible on all fronts and to win something.
Is this your most demanding season? I must admit this is one of the most demanding seasons I’ve had, because in April we are still competing on three fronts. But it’s enjoyable, and I’m truly happy to have achieved this in my career. I don’t know when I’ll retire, maybe at the end of this season, maybe in a year or two, and I won’t have other chances.
What do you think about Olise? He’s very strong, and so is all of Bayern Munich. I knew him already when he was at Crystal Palace; he’s very technical and fast. We will aim to stop him and deny him a good performance, like he had in the first leg.
Do you feel like favorites after the first leg? We don’t think about it; tomorrow starts again from 0-0. We must stay focused, but tomorrow we’ll have the advantage of playing in front of our fans. The first-leg victory was one week ago, and tomorrow everything changes.
Can Inter be dangerous on the counterattack? We must do our best, knowing Bayern comes to Milan to win. It won’t be easy, but we also want to qualify and perform well in front of our audience.
How do you cope with fatigue? Playing every three or four days is more enjoyable than playing once a week. We treat each match as if it were a final, and that’s the adrenaline that pushes us to always play our best.
