With a choice that remains inexplicable even after the match, Felix Zwayer decided in the final moments to put his mark on the final result of Inter-Liverpool. The referee, called to the monitor for a slight contact between Bastoni and Wirtz, in fact overturned his initial decision by awarding a penalty in front of a justifiably incredulous San Siro.
During the post-match, harsh criticism was directed at Zwayer in the Sky Sport studios. In particular, Fabio Capello cried scandal, admitting: “It’s a disgrace to award a penalty like this.”
To add fuel to the fire, former Inter player Goran Pandev then declared: “The referee decided it because Inter did not deserve to lose this match.”
