Federico Dimarco’s injury is undoubtedly a heavy blow for Inter and will probably keep him out at least for the match against Manchester City, but his presence is not even guaranteed for Sunday’s derby against Milan.
Coach Simone Inzaghi will thus be forced to do without one of the main sources of his team’s play, who is in great form and was the best on the field on a bleak night like that in Monza. In view of Manchester City, the coach’s choice to replace number 32 seems obvious and leads to the use of Carlos Augusto as a full winger.
The total rest given to Alessandro Bastoni in Brianza is good news in bad news, because the defender will be at 100% against the City and will allow the Brazilian to move again in the midfield five. However, there is another option that Inzaghi could draw on, especially in case of (unfortunate) absence of Dimarco also in the derby, if Carlos Augusto returned energy-depleted from England.
The solution would be to deploy Matteo Darmian on the left, with Denzel Dumfries taking the lead in the derby to engage in the now epic and systematic duel, technical and character-wise, with Theo Hernandez. We will see, but everyone’s hope at Appiano Gentile is that Dimarco will be available already in the derby.
