On the occasion of the last episode aired last night in the Pressing studios, Sandro Sabatini and Riccardo Trevisani—with the participation of Fabrizio Biasin—were the protagonists of a clash about Inter. Specifically, what divided the commentators was the comparison between the performance of the team coached by Simone Inzaghi last season and this year’s with Cristian Chivu at the helm.
This is the argument that took place live:
Trevisani: “Last year’s league? But they threw it away to reach the Champions League final. It wasn’t thrown away because it was raining and it started to rain. Weren’t the two things connected? Completely. Completely connected. 10 fewer matches in the Champions League, Inter wins the league in January. Inter with full points in the Champions League? But they played against Pizzighettone in the Champions League. Come on, give it a rest Sandro. Please, you explained to us that last year Inter didn’t win in Parma because of Inzaghi’s substitutions. Bayern Munich was coming up three days later. I saw Parma come back from 0-2 at home against Milan, who didn’t have the Champions League in three days. Today you’ll tell us that Allegri’s substitutions made it 2-2.”
Sabatini: “Listen, last year there’s nothing wrong with saying Inter was the strongest and lost the league. Then, if you get annoyed about Inzaghi, it means you are, how can I say, sensitive about the subject. I say they lost it. Then, for me, for the most part, it has nothing to do with the league. Because the matches Inter played in the Champions League, PSG played them too, other teams played them too.”
Biasin: “Because to me it seems that Chivu’s excellent work doesn’t necessarily have to come from speaking badly about what happened last year.”
Sabatini: “It’s not about speaking badly, Fabrizio. The comparison has to be made, though.”
Biasin: “The first one to tell you that this thing is, in my opinion, this small, is Cristian Chivu. He doesn’t need to be told that last year things didn’t go badly. Every time there’s a press conference, Cristian Chivu says: ‘This is a group that did very well last year and I’m carrying on with a group that did very well.’ There’s no need, every time, to say that last year, instead, was a disaster. Because it wasn’t a disaster.”
Sabatini: “But no one says it was a disaster. But I should be free to make the comparison. Chivu doesn’t do it? I get it, otherwise Chivu would come to Pressing. I come to Pressing instead of doing the press conference at Pinetina and I make the comparison with last year. There’s no need to get upset because I say that last year Inter lost the league. Because it’s plain for everyone to see.”
Biasin: “But can’t you just say that Chivu is doing great and he’s doing something that maybe wasn’t even predictable, but that doesn’t mean that those who were there before weren’t good.”
Sabatini: “But excuse me a moment. I get it. Now we’re digressing. If I tell you he’s doing better than last year, I’m saying he’s doing great. Last year they did well. But I’m saying he’s doing better than last year. Can’t I make the comparison? Why can’t I make the comparison? Can you explain to me why I can’t compare with last year?”
Biasin: “Because then you can make the comparison with last year. At the first draw you’ll say, instead… I see the future.”
Sabatini: “At the first draw what I’ll say, I know what I’ll say at the first draw. You see the future? What do you mean you see the future…”
Trevisani: “Last year Inter got 82 points. This year, the average with today’s points is 82.9. But they haven’t reached the Champions League final yet and the team is stronger.”
Sabatini: “These are the arguments you make with artificial intelligence. Because the calculations are done by artificial intelligence. What matters is being first, not 82 or 82.9.”
