Speaking to Sky Sport, Bergomi analyzed the characteristics of Spence, who was named MVP in Inter‘s match against Feyenoord, drawing a direct comparison with Dumfries.
“Spence and Dumfries are different players,” explained the former defender. “Dumfries has zero dribbling, a lot of physical strength, Spence is faster than Dumfries but the difference is in assists and goals.” Bergomi then recalled the Dutchman’s adaptation process: “Even Dumfries needed time when he arrived, at first he played in a back four and then he became what he is now.” The critical point, according to him, concerns the quality of offensive plays: “If Spence improves the quality of his crosses, his assists… He doesn’t have that heading ability, that finishing touch that the Dutchman had.”
The overall assessment of the Englishman, however, remains positive: “Of the three English players, Spence is the one with the most room for improvement and at the European level, where you have space to attack, he becomes perfect.”
Bergomi then focused on the mental resilience of the Nerazzurri after the defeat in the derby: “In these six years, Inter has always been good at bouncing back and recovering after a major disappointment, there was a reaction, now they need to keep it going.” However, he reiterated a recurring concern: “I continue to think that Inter’s fragility in the derby is clear, the speed of some Milan players like Moreira and Pulisic exposes Inter’s difficulties, as does the physicality of Rabiot.” He added: “Since I really believe in energy, Milan was hungry and you could see the difference.”
Finally, a look ahead to the next match against Como: “Inter will have to make some adjustments and corrections, last year they went behind twice with a double deficit and came back, but this Como is more mature, more attentive, they defend differently, so a great, important performance is needed.”
