After the 3-2 defeat at San Siro against Inter, Napoli coach Massimiliano Allegri commented on the performance to DAZN microphones. The coach highlighted the positive aspects but also the mistakes that cost the team dearly.
“It was an entertaining match for the spectators and for Inter, who won, less so for us,” Allegri began. “The 1-2 goal came too easily, then they changed the tempo because they are good and strong and put us in trouble. We thought the ball was out and we stopped on the cross, but that’s football. We could have scored, they could have scored, they did and won the match.”
The coach acknowledged there is room for improvement: “We need to improve. The performance remains in the ball management after the first twenty minutes in which they started strong, as we expected. Even in the first half we had favorable situations when we didn’t score. Out of nowhere they sparked, down 0-2, they are very good.”
Allegri explained the tactical choice of adding a third center-back after 2-1: “We wanted to defend inside the box and we conceded a goal like that. Maybe I could have made different choices but that’s how it went. The boys still put in a good performance.” On the playing time at the end, the coach preferred to highlight Vergara’s work: “It was the first time he played as a mezzala and he did it with intensity and quality.”
The sore point remains the defensive phase: “We have conceded five goals in two matches… This doesn’t mean we have to defend inside the box. When we have the ball we need to score and when we don’t, we must not concede. If we concede three goals in half an hour, we need to do better, that’s for sure.” Despite the defeat, Allegri wanted to highlight the positive aspects: “Today was a good direct clash, also enjoyable to watch, with important technical gestures. Even with less whistling from the referee, the game benefits.”
