An embrace full of emotion with the team’s veterans, then one with Cristian Chivu. Piero Ausilio said goodbye yesterday at Appiano Gentile to the Inter that had been his home for 28 years. The now former sporting director wanted to meet in person with the coach, players, technical staff, and club personnel before definitively closing a chapter that began in 1998.
According to the Corriere dello Sport, strong emotion was inevitable on a day full of feelings. The most symbolic moments were the embraces with the players he himself had brought to Pinetina and with Chivu, who was strongly wanted at the beginning of last summer after the end of the Inzaghi chapter, despite the very brief experience in Parma gained by the Romanian coach before arriving in Milan.
These are intense days emotionally for Ausilio, between Wednesday’s farewell announcement and the moment of goodbyes. The last official act on a professional level was related to the contract extension of Pio Esposito. Yesterday morning at Pinetina, president Giuseppe Marotta and Dario Baccin, who was appointed the new sporting director, were also present.
There remains some doubt about Ausilio’s presence at San Siro for Inter-Napoli tomorrow, the newspaper reports. Once the goodbyes were over, the former executive passed through the Pinetina gate to leave. Everyone had the feeling they had witnessed the end of an era.
