After being the main target of Inter for many months, Albert Gudmundsson eventually gave in to the heavy courtship of Fiorentina last summer. In comparison to the waiting game strategy of the Nerazzurri, influenced by the failed transfers of Arnautovic and Correa, La Viola was more decisive with an offer suitable to Genoa’s needs.

The move was somewhat of a market disappointment for many Inter fans who had considered the Icelandic forward perfect for the technical needs of Simone Inzaghi’s team. Having crossed the halfway mark of the season, we can already review what has been Gudmundsson’s less than fortunate performance with Fiorentina.

The former Genoa player, already limited by a couple of injuries at the start of his experience in Florence, also encountered another setback in today’s match lost against Como. Subbed on in the 55th minute of the second half, Gudmundsson had to wave the white flag about twenty minutes later and leave the pitch due to a bad fall. From initial impressions, it seems to be a sacral bone bruise.

If confirmed, this would be the third major injury of his first season with La Viola. After a calf problem during the initial weeks of summer, Gudmundsson missed almost two months of play due to a hamstring injury. Additionally, the Icelander recently missed a make-up league match against Inter due to severe tonsillitis.

Because of the numerous injuries, the former Genoa attacker has never really been in good form. This has led to numbers below his expected performance when he arrived in Florence: 820 minutes of play across all competitions, five goals, one of them being a brace against Lazio, and just one assist.

While we wait to see if he can improve his contribution to Fiorentina, the question arises naturally: should his missed transfer to Inter last summer now truly be considered as a market regret for Inter?
