Yesterday, the return of Valentin Carboni to the Inter team was officially announced. The Argentine striker, who was loaned to Marseille at the beginning of the season, suffered a cruciate ligament injury last October while playing for the Argentine National team. Since then, after undergoing surgery, he started a long process of rehabilitation.

For this reason, Inter and Marseille decided to stop the loan to allow the 2005-born player to continue his recovery in Milan, at the facilities of the Nerazzurri club and under the guidance of their own physicians. As for his return to the field, this could happen – in the best case scenario – starting in April.

From then, in the past few hours, several Nerazzurri fans have wondered if Valentin Carboni will be useful to Simone Inzaghi and if he will be useable in various competitions. So, to this question, we have found a definitive answer looking at the regulations.

First of all, it should be clarified that the main goal of Inter is to have Valentin Carboni available for the Club World Cup in June. From the Nerazzurri club, which has a full team, there is no rush to anticipate the return of the young player to the field, and this idea is likely not to change in the coming weeks.

In terms of regulations, however, it should be clarified that Valentin Carboni – once recovered from the cruciate injury – could play at the end of this season in all the competitions available with Inter.

Let’s start with the Champions League where Carboni is part of the Inter club’s List B, i.e. the one dedicated to Under 22 of each team. The procedure for these lists, as stated in the UEFA regulation, states that they can be modified and submitted no later than 24:00 CET the day before each match.

In Serie A, on the other hand, the Lega prohibition to players not included in the list of 25 players to participate in championship matches during the validity period of the list itself does not apply to players who have not reached the age of 22 by December 31 of the previous sporting season, which includes Valentin Carboni. The same logic is applied to the Coppa Italia, another competition in which the Argentine could play.

In short, should he recover well and show a brilliant physical condition starting from the month of April, the Argentine talent could become an unexpected weapon for the final part of Inter’s season, as well as an additional resource for the next Club World Cup.
