After weeks of apparent silence, Inter and Milan are ready to present an ambitious new project to the Municipality of Milan for the construction of a stadium in the San Siro area. The plan includes a structure with 71,500 seats, surrounded by 55,000 square meters of green spaces and 72,000 square meters of underground parking. The total investment ranges between 1 and 1.5 billion euros, partly financed by the clubs and their own funds, Oaktree for Inter and RedBird for Milan, in addition to loans from banking institutions such as Jp Morgan, Bank of America and Banco Bpm.
The new stadium, as reported by the Corriere della Sera, is expected to be built in the area currently allocated for Meazza parking, positioned perpendicular to the current structure. It will have a capacity of 71,500 seats, of which 13,000 will be reserved for the hospitality areas, with exclusive services for companies and sponsors. Access will be guaranteed by a covered ‘podium’, thereby eliminating the traditional gates and turnstiles. On the design front, although not yet official, the American firm Populous seems to be the favorite, having already drawn up a project in 2021 and having a permanent presence in Italy.
The goal is to complete the detailed project as quickly as possible and present it to the municipality of Milan by the end of February or beginning of March, as requested by Mayor Giuseppe Sala. Once the municipality approves it, a call for bids can be made and the service conference can start, which according to the Stadium Law must conclude in 18 months. If everything goes smoothly without bureaucratic hiccups, work could begin in early 2027 and finish in 2030.
Once the new structure is completed, San Siro will not be completely demolished. The plan includes preserving part of the South Curve and the adjacent stand to transform them into a museum-memorial. This area could also host the administrative headquarters of the two clubs, while the rest of the space will be allocated to parks and commercial areas. For the rest, as reported in the newspaper, “the area of 280,000 square meters will be occupied by commercial spaces and parks”.
