Four consecutive defeats in the Champions League and just as many at San Siro: the European moment of Inter is at the center of the analysis published by Libero, which takes inspiration from the recent cup losses to draw a critical picture of Chivu‘s team in European competitions.
The most striking fact, according to the newspaper, is the total absence of draws in the last eight Champions League matches: only one victory — the one achieved in Dortmund — and seven defeats. “The absence of draws is an indicator of the problem: the team thinks about attacking, forgetting to defend carefully, accepting dirty and hard-fought stretches of the match. There are four consecutive defeats in the Champions League and four in a row also at San Siro, where the team tends to overexpose itself: this is demonstrated by the chances conceded to Bruges,” writes the newspaper.
At the center of the reflection there is also a structural theme: Inter works better when it remains compact in a short block, and does so with good results in the league, but in Europe the mechanism jams. “Inter falls apart in the Champions League. The more it wants to win, the more it loses its shape. This does not happen in the league because it manages to impose itself more easily, remaining compact and organized. But by its characteristics, Inter must stay within thirty meters and not fifty, regardless of whether the line is high or low,” reads the analysis by Libero.
The quality gap with European opponents worsens the problem: “Especially in the Champions League, where opponents know how to exploit wide spaces, with an average quality higher than Serie A,” concludes the newspaper.
