Marcel Desailly gave an interview to the Corriere della Sera touching on various topics related to Italian football. The former Milan defender shared some thoughts on the current situation of the movement and the difficulties it is facing.
Regarding the prospects of Italian teams, Desailly stated: “Of course, yes, it is one of the main realities along with Inter, which is also aiming for the Champions League. But I don’t like to interfere too much, I cheer from afar.”
The Frenchman admitted that he does not regularly follow Serie A: “I don’t watch it much. You tell me why, in general, Italian football is no longer watched.” A reflection that highlights the difficulties of the Italian league’s appeal at an international level.
Asked about Mancini’s choice, the former defender commented: “There is great interest around him. But it’s not easy to work miracles: when you go through a crisis, it takes time to recover. The problem perhaps concerns the academies, the stadiums, the playing philosophy, maybe all these things together. Maybe something is missing in the way new generations are developed.”
