Serena remembers San Siro: the '89 championship and the Mundialito

On the day of the centenary of San Siro, Aldo Serena expressed his point of view on the future of the stadium. The former Inter and Milan striker, interviewed by Corriere della Sera, expressed a position against demolition: “I am nostalgic, I played at the Scala del Calcio for ten years. So I would have preferred an intervention along the lines of the Bernabeu: modernization, not demolition.”

Serena recalled his most significant memories linked to the Meazza. The first impact dates back to 1978, when he arrived at Inter: “When I moved to Inter and was called up for a friendly: I was left speechless. It was gigantic, I kept telling myself ‘I’ll never be able to perform in there’. San Siro is intimidating for those who aren’t used to it.”

The unforgettable match for the former striker is Inter-Napoli on May 28, 1989: “For me, who was a Nerazzurri fan as a child, winning the Scudetto at San Siro and celebrating the triumph with the fans was a unique experience. During the lap of honor I cried thinking back to myself as a child playing.”

Another important moment concerns his experience with Milan in the Mundialito: “I scored two goals in the Mundialito wearing the Milan shirt, the fans made me uncomfortable by dedicating chants to me because they knew I would return to Inter. I still convinced myself to go under the curva to experience the moment.”
