Beppe Bergomi analyzed Inter‘s performance against Real Madrid directly from the pitch at the Bernabeu, after commenting on the match for Sky Sport. The former Nerazzurri captain highlighted the risks of the playing system adopted by the team in European competitions, pointing out the difficulties against opponents with speed and counter-attacking ability.
According to Bergomi, European football is characterized by teams that field three or four players capable of playing one-on-one, attacking spaces, and counter-attacking effectively. In this context, the three-defender formation used by Inter is an almost unique choice: no one else in Europe adopts this system, which exposes the team to considerable risks. The need to pass the ball to gain ground inevitably leads to mistakes, flaws that are amplified in Europe.
Lo Zio recalled the words of Lautaro Martinez, who had pointed out that Real had many fast players. Inter plays beautiful and courageous football, but when facing counter-attacking teams, they encounter obvious difficulties. Ball management and finishing accuracy should have been better in the Bernabeu match.
Bergomi nonetheless praised the work of the Nerazzurri wing-backs. Diouf put in a high-level performance, consistently taking on his opponent: if he continues like this, Inter will have found a player capable of making a difference in one-on-one situations. Carlos Augusto also made an important contribution, delivering two crosses in the first half. Real gave little away in the center and defended well against crosses, forcing Inter to look for solutions on the flanks.
